This image can help you to see that a geologic map is a map that shows where a type of rock occurs at the surface. Below (left) is a photo taken from the air of part of the San Francisco volcanic field north of Flagstaff, Arizona, and a simplified geologic map of the same area to the right. Notice that the rocks that appear different in the air photo are mapped as different colors in the geologic map on the right.
