Exercise 1C

Creating a Topographic Profile

To further explore the relationship between contour lines and topography of the landscape, you will construct a type of figure, called a topographic profile, which allows you to see the “side view” of a feature on a topographic map. It’s like taking a slice out of a hill and looking at it from the side.

The short movie below shows how to construct a topographic profile. This is a large file and so may take a few moments to fully load. It is an MP4 file so should play on any type of device.

Movie of How To Make a Topographic Profile (with closed captioning via MediaAMP) This link takes you to Modalis (MediaAmp), where you will sign in using your ASU email. The home page contains an introductory video about Modalis and a video from UTO (University Technology Office), both of which you can ignore. Click on the Collections tab on the left side of the page to view a folder containing all the closed-captioned movies for this online course. For Exercise 1C, choose the link: how_to_make_a_topographic_profile_old.mp4. Now that you are signed in, the next time you click on a closed-captioned movie, you will be taken directly to the movie without having to click on the Collections tab.
