Module 14.

Geology and Landscapes of Arizona

Synopsis

You will use photographs of landscapes in Arizona and a digital version of the geologic map of Arizona to explore the geology and scenery of the entire state. You will observe photographs of almost any part of Arizona and develop generalizations about the landscapes that characterize each major region in the state. You will also be using the Geologic Map of Arizona to compare the rocks and geologic structures exposed in different regions of the state. Finally, you will summarize the geology and landscapes of the state.

Introduction

In Modules 10 and 11, you explored the geology of northern Arizona (the Grand Canyon) and southern and central Arizona, and noticed some similarities and differences between the geology of each region. Now it is time to see how this geology is reflected in the scenery you see as you travel across the state. One exercise in this module lets you look at scenic photographs of Arizona, in a kind of virtual field trip. The other exercise uses a digital Geologic Map of Arizona.

Goals for This Module

Learn how to make observations about landscapes

Identify different regions of Arizona and the scenery that characterizes each region

Characterize the elevations, rock types, and geologic structures in different regions in Arizona

Use the Geologic Map of Arizona to summarize the geology of specific places in Arizona
