The reconnaissance team has returned from a second trip, with a new collection of rocks from Painted Canyon. Some rocks are suspected to be slate or gneiss; the type of rocks that form at depth during mountain building. You will learn how to classify and identify these new kinds of rocks by using several reference collections. Then, you will examine the samples from Painted Canyon and identify them. You will locate where the samples were collected.
High temperatures and pressures at depth can change existing rocks into new kinds of rocks, without actually melting them. Rocks formed in these various hot or deep environments are widely exposed, occupying many mountain belts. Such rocks constitute an important part of the geologic story of Painted Canyon.
