3.  The water has been moved aside for the ease of visualization.  Water has deposited a layer of sand over the basement and a layer of mud over the sand.   Notice how the layers are building upward.  If the water continues to rise, it will continue to deposit sand and mud.

On your worksheet, explain why the mud layer does not entirely cover the layer of sand.
