Exercise 2B

Locating Yourself in Painted Canyon

1. Examine the topographic map of Painted Canyon provided here.

2. Examine the various overview 3D perspectives of Painted Canyon. Compare what you see on the overviews with your topographic map, trying to find obvious features on the map. Look for flat areas to build a base camp.

3. Now take a moment to look at theĀ Painted Canyon explanation image, which points out a few of the key features in Painted Canyon. You do not have to do anything with these for now, but knowing what these features are will help you later. This view is looking to the north from the south edge of the map

4. Finally, examine the Named Features Image 3D perspective and try to figure out where each feature on the image is located on your topographic map. You might want to write these down on your copy of the map to help you refer to these places more easily in later weeks; however, you do not have to upload this map for grading.

5. If you need to examine the topography of Painted Canyon, there are two types of movies, where contours are draped over topography. One of these movies should play on your device.

The link below is to an MP4 movie that spins the terrain. You can stop the movie at any view or drag the indicator to some other view. This type of file should run on most devices, including tablets.
