GeoBlocks 3D -- Interactive 3D Geologic Blocks

GeoBlocks 3D contains interactive QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) movies exploring the three-dimensional nature of geology, specifically geologic structures within blocks.  You can rotate the blocks, make them partially transparent to view their internal structure, cut through or erode them, displace faults, and more.

There are several ways to use the GeoBlocks 3D materials.

List of Files This link leads to list of files, so that you can find a particular type of movie (e.g., gently plunging syncline) without going through the modules below.
Teacher's Guide This link leads to a pdf document containing links to sections of the document.  Each section describes various aspects of the module: a module description, learning objectives and questions for discussion, materials and resources, creation of the module, research and evaluation, dissemination, references, and module worksheets.
Content Guide This link leads to a pdf document that outlines the five main sections of the module and emphasizes the key vocabulary words covered.  Still images related to each vocabulary word are shown with the definitions.
Student Guide This link leads to a pdf document that is intended for students to read before using the module.  It serves as a summary of the module and can help to facilitate independent student use.  This document describes the types of movies in the module and how students can interact with the movies to create changes.

Main Module

The most detailed module, requiring approximately 2-3 hours for students to complete.  Used at ASU for undergraduate Structural Geology and the summer nonmajors geology labs.

Main Module Home This link takes you to the opening page of the main module and to the introduction, which describes how to view the blocks.  Students should start here on the first day.

Worksheets Worksheets for the main module (five files -- do not contain "short" in their file names). Word and PDF versions.

Abbreviated Modules

Two shorter modules covering a selection of each type of geologic structure.  Requires approximately 1 hour for students to complete.  These are used at ASU for nonmajor geology labs during normal semesters where time is tight.
